Adlerian Art Therapy Benefits
Exploration & Expression
Art is an extremely powerful and useful tool in (1) exploring one's inner world
(2) expressing complex/difficult topics, and
(3) connecting people's thoughts, emotions & sensations for themselves and with others.
Art Therapy, can be a fantastic non-verbal way to communicate. Thus, aiding those who may struggle to find words to share their experience(s) with words, to feel less alone and/or find hope in the possibility of healing.
Support & Skills
To us Adlerian (Art) Therapists, how a person deals with life can only be fully understood by looking at all components of their personality and experience, since these combined are what make someone who they are.
I am passionate about ensuring everyone has the support & skills needed to feel safe and consciously evolve to be their best selves, regardless of their circumstances.
Complementary Alternative
Counselling Art Therapy, as a non-pharmacological medical complementary and alternative therapy, has been used as a medical intervention and shows beneficial clinical effects on overall well-being.
Validate, Belong & Purpose
Everyone deserves the right to feel heard, seen, & valued, as well as a sense of belonging and purpose.
Self - Compassion
Creating art with a professional Counselling (Art) Therapist can help people practice being ~ soft ~ on oneself, as opposed to hard on oneself.
I can speak from personal experience with this, as I have also been on the client side of Art Therapy since I was a teen. Learning Self - Compassion can feel awkward & foreign at first, perhaps even inauthentic & silly. Having a professional Art Therapist to support and hold space for your practising of Self - Compassion can be a great place to start embodying it.
Gentle Way to Explore the Past
Adlerian work often explores: early recollections family dynamics meaning-making from childhood. Art allows this to emerge symbolically.
There's less pressure than “tell me about your childhood”, so it can feel safer for those with trauma or are more emotionally guarded
Visual Processing
As a visual processor myself, I have first had experience with witnessing the benefits of communicating difficult concepts, thoughts, feelings, and experiences through art.
